Toshiba's G900 superphone passes FCC muster
FCC ratification really doesn't mean much of anything about a phone's eventual release or non-release stateside, but in this case, we're doing a little jump of joy nonetheless. The reason? Toshiba's do-it-all G900 with slide-out QWERTY, Windows Mobile 6 Professional, WiFi, biometric security, 2 megapixel primary cam, tri-band HSDPA, and a glorious wide VGA display has been stamped with the feds' seal of approval. Yep, we said tri-band HSDPA, so anyone interested in trying their luck at obtaining an import should have no trouble using it here for fast data. We've seen the G900 variously referred to as a Portege and a Satellite -- here it's just called RG4-E02 -- but frankly, they can call it whatever they like and we'll still be happy campers.
Update: Sorry to break hearts here, but it appears that this particular variant of the G900 isn't even remotely bound for US shores; besides failing to support WCDMA 850 / 1900, it doesn't even offer GSM 850. Our apologies for the mix-up; let's hope the next G900 we see in the FCC offers just a little more juice. [Thanks, Mike]

now THAT'S a phone. it's got everything, WiFi AND HSDPA. add a couple gigs of internal memory with an expansion slot and you've got something you can reasonably and fairly charge 499 or 599 for.
Matt @ Jun 1st 2007 7:54PM
I think $499-$599 is a bit optimistic, but I like how you think.
Tri-band HSDPA will work for AT&T, but will it be compatile when T-Mobile (eventually) rolls out their 3G?
Robbie @ Jun 2nd 2007 3:16PM
tmobile is rolling out on 1700mhz for 3g
carlo @ Jun 1st 2007 9:23PM
haha, TOTALLY optimistic! It'd probably come out to be between 6-9 hundo.
I think if T-Mobile snatched it up, it could really boost their image to mobile office product fans. It's great competition for the 8525. Besides, ATT grabbing it would be a bit redundant.
I fear that ATT is going to lose a bit of its Windows Mobile manufacturer support though with its huge iPhone push--but you never know. I wonder what that contract says... If someone could dig it up...
Anyway, I've enjoyed the evolution of their Wizard/Tytn line. This ads a great new facet and it's from a well established notebook maker.

No it (likely) won't be compaatable w/ T-Mobile's 3g. You're asking about compatibility with a network that isn't even deployed yet.

I'm not sure on the tri-band HSDPA.
If you look at the specifications in the User's Manual (page 114 of the pdf) it looks as if this will be GSM 900/1800/1900 and HSDPA 2100.
As in, not much use in the USA unless you want to use this thing on T-Mobile's EDGE network.

@Matt
Wow, I had just taken the article at face value, but you are definitely right. The manual doesn't include any UMTS band other than 2100! Retraction.
Way to dig!

That keyboard looks scary-similar to the 6700 from Verizon.
clay282 @ Jun 2nd 2007 8:01AM
it looks a little big for some reason
Jesse S @ Jun 2nd 2007 10:51AM
WHY CAN'T IT BE CDMA?
And Clay, it's 480p.
Zola @ Jun 2nd 2007 12:51PM
The keyboard resembles the 6700 from Verizon-giantly big.

I said T-Mobile's EDGE network.
Reason being, this phone lacks GSM 850. A lot of AT&T's GSM coverage is 850, whereas T-Mobile is all 1900.
So, the best you'll be able to do for a data network with reasonable coverage is T-Mobile EDGE.

Thing needs a GPS (not a-gps either) to be a worthy HTC killer.

Breakin my heart here man.....that's the device I'm waiting for. Any other VGA phones out there?
Nfinity @ Jul 3rd 2007 6:41PM
Wow, the design is pretty plain, but this phone is ABSOLUTELY amazing. I'm seriously consider getting it and I'm all for luxury phones and crap, but this one is really impressive. I'm glad I didn't get iPhone. After Engadget's review of iPhone, I'm even more satisfied that i waited. And this one might be the one I like. I'm just curious how the browser will work, the video and mp3 (I assume WMP?).
This phone blows everything away. Look at that beautiful keyboard. And the the phone is not even that big. I saw a photo next to the CD on a desk. It's pretty small.
